AnyTone AT-D868UV Review

Anytone At D868uvCommunication has long been a point of focus for the human race, and that’s to be expected from a fundamentally social species. For much of the 20th century, radio was the most advanced form of communication used by people worldwide, and it’s still prevalent in a wide range of industries.

Today, we’ll be reviewing a two-way radio from AnyTone: the AT-D868UV. We’ll cover everything about it, include features, pros, and cons.

Anytone AT-D868UV Features

This radio from AnyTone comes equipped with a wide range of features that help put it ahead of its nearest competitors. To make this model as compatible as possible, it can be programmed directly from a Windows computer, and this ensures that it’s an attractive choice for beginners.

AnyTone has developed this radio to work on the UHF band, as well as the VHF band, and it is capable of working across 4000 channels. This radio can also be programmed with over 150 000 contacts, and it’s easy to browse through them thanks to the clear display that’s in full color.

At 1.77 inches, the screen on this radio is relatively compact, though it’s still clear enough to read text with ease. This radio even has a recording function so that you can keep logs of your conversations, making it perfect for use in professional environments where this is a necessity.

There is even an optional GPS function on this ham radio that will allow it to be located in remote areas. This works alongside the VOX emergency alarm, transmitting data about the position of the person in distress. To hear transmissions more clearly, you can use the Kenwood connector to attach headphones to this radio as well.

This radio even includes a few key quality of life features, like a display for caller ID or contact names. The included lithium-ion battery is rechargeable, and it saves you money on disposable batteries. It is charged through the included charger base, and it even comes with a belt clip so that you can carry it around.

Of course, one of the best things about this radio is its true 2-slot functionality, making it a lot easier to communicate with whoever is on the other end. This model meets both Tier I and Tier II DMR standards, and it works as both a digital and analog radio for improved versatility.

Pros

One of the best things about this radio is how easy it is to use. If you have no experience with two-way radios, then you’ll find it a lot easier to get used to this one. We also appreciated all of the extras that came included with this radio, like the dual-band antenna, the belt clip, and the AC adapter.

The maximum output of 7 watts is also impressive when you consider the size of this radio, and it offers all of the features that you would expect from a more expensive radio, like a color display. If you’re looking to improve the performance of this radio further, you can equip it with an aftermarket antenna to get even more range out of it.

Cons

There are a few key downsides to this radio, but nothing that overcomes the various advantages. One of the most obvious problems is that the volume adjustment control is just too finicky. When you’re near the lower end of the scale, you either won’t be able to hear anything, or it will be just a little bit too loud.

Tying into one of the pros that we mentioned earlier, we would have preferred that the included antenna were more powerful. As it is, if you want to get any substantial range out of this radio, you’re going to need to equip it with a third-party antenna.

Conclusion

Overall, this is an underdog radio that can compete with the models made by some of the biggest names in the industry. Even though we ran into a couple of issues, we found that the reasonable price point and the impressive array of features helped put the AnyTone handheld HAM radio up there with the best.
