Can Humans Breath on Mars?

Since human beings have discovered Mars, the Red Planet has fascinated them. Over the years, experts have learned more about our neighboring planet, and it has also been considered a contender for human colonization in the future.

That being said, in this article, we will focus on whether it is possible for humans to breath on mars or not. Can we Breath on the Red Planet?

Unfortunately, human beings can’t breathe on the Red Planet without proper equipment since its atmosphere consists of Carbon Dioxide. This means that even if we had oxygen on Mars, it would be impossible for us to breath. If we end up sending human beings to Mars, they will need to go with proper breathing equipment.

The Atmosphere of Mars?

The atmosphere is about 100 times thinner than Earth’s atmosphere and contains traces of Carbon Monoxide, Water vapors, Noble Gases, Oxygen, and Hydrogen. Here are some key statistics:

Has NASA Produced Oxygen on Mars?

Yes! Recently NASA has conducted an experiment that can turn the toxic, tenuous Martian atmosphere into Oxygen. The experiment is known as MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization experiment). MOXIE is a step in the right direction as it gets us closer to solving the Oxygen problem on Mars. Moxie works by sucking the Carbon Dioxide from the Martian atmosphere and heating it at about 800 degrees Celsius.

This enables MOXIE to strip Oxygen from the Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere and vent out Carbon Monoxide. Rover conducted the first experiment on 5th April 2021, and it successfully produced around five grams of Oxygen. This amount of Oxygen can enable a human to breath for ten minutes on the Red Planet.

However, MOXIE still has a long way to go, but the initial results are extremely promising and are a stepping stone toward the ultimate goal of putting human beings on Mars one day. Right now, MOXIE can only produce up to ten grams of Oxygen per hour, but the Perseverance Rover is expected to conduct around nine more experiments over the next year or so.

Is it Dangerous to Breath on Mars?

If human beings could breathe in the Mars air, they would be in big trouble. The air on the Red Planet is toxic for human beings, and breathing it in can prove to be fatal. Exposure to the poisonous gases in the Mar’s atmosphere can lead to cancer and other dangerous diseases.

Airborne dust and soil on Mars contain traces of hazardous elements, such as toxic metals, which can be harmful to the body if you inhale a sufficient quantity. However, humans are safe for now, as no human is expected to step foot on our neighboring Red Planet anytime soon.

Climate and Weather of Mars?

Early in its history, Mars had a much thicker atmosphere so that water could run on the planet’s surface. Some surface features point to the fact that Mars probably experienced huge floods about 3.5 Billion years or so.

Orbital photographs have shown possible ocean boundaries and river plains on the Planet. Several Space Rovers have uncovered water-soaked rocks on the planet’s surface (Such as Clay or Hematite). However, due to unknown reasons, Mars still has a thin atmosphere.

Mar is colder than Earth, thanks to its thin atmosphere and far from the sun. The temperature on average on Mars is -60 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature can be lower than that, falling below -195 degrees Celsius occasionally.

Like our planet, Mars has four seasons, but since the planet has an eccentric orbit, it is tough to predict the length of the four seasons.
