The Eton Grundig S450DLX is one of the pricier Eton shortwave radios especially when compared with some of the other Eton models like the Field BT or Executive Traveler, but it’s well worth the extra money you spend as it comes with some amazing features that would blow you away.
That’s not saying it doesn’t have its own pitfalls though; it certainly does and we will cover that as well, but know that the S450DLX might disappoint you on first impressions.
However, if you’re willing to look beyond the surface, you will probably be pleased with what it has to offer.
So without further ado, let’s get down to business.
Eton Grundig S450DLX Features
We usually don’t review products where we have to start off with discussing a major issue with the product. However, the S450DLX is certainly an exception as its other features almost more than make up for the relatively poor build quality.
But that doesn’t erase the fact that the S450DLX is made of cheap, apparently low-quality plastic with a knob that feels loose and some of the buttons cheap.
You could also feel that the two small tabs that come right below the battery door may not last for too long.
Sure, you could be a bit more careful with your use to avoid any durability issues, but it’s always going to be a little worrying all the same.
Ok, so now we are going to start talking about what made us review this product despite the major issue associated with it that we discussed above.
With large, super functional frequency digits, blue backlight and great visibility the functionality is impressive. But what’s even more impressive is how it gives the much larger full-sized radios a run for their money when connected with large external antennas.
You would usually have many problems when using large external antennas with small portable radios, but not with the S450DLX.
There would be absolutely no imaging or overload anywhere which is very common with other small radios in such a situation. Even with the gain control wide open, the S450DLX would leave you surprised with the output it produces.
This is true for both shortwave and mediumwave, which puts the S450DLX in a class of its own.
Similar to what we said above, the S450DLX easily compares with large and expensive tabletop radios when it comes to the overall sound as well.
It’s surprisingly loud for a small portable radio, especially when you’re still spending less than $200 on the device.
The sensitivity on both SW and MW is excellent, and the FM sounds great as well.
Apart from some of the most amazing features of the S450DLX that we discussed above, there are some other features worth a mention.
- Super smooth operation for AM broadcast band DXer with no distortion, noises, or oscillation
- Even many users with years of experience with HAM radios and shortwave are all praise for its AM capabilities
- You would be hard-pressed to find another shortwave radio with an external F-connector at this price
- Great reception and has no problem picking up stations on both AM and FM
- Tone controls help you make changes to the sound so that it perfectly suits your ears
Again, we are back to where we started. Despite all the praise it gets for some hard-to-find features in this price range that it offers, the fact remains that the build quality isn’t as good as some of the other radios out there.
In addition, there also seem to be some quality issues with some units, and some users do talk about “getting lucky” if you get one that works well as then it’s a great bang for your buck.
This is probably the most suitable explanation for the highly contrasting mixed reviews that it has gotten.
Get Lucky with It!
Well, the Eton Grundig S450DLX certainly does have a couple major issues, but you will probably be just fine if you get a unit that works well and doesn’t have any quality issues.
If you do, you will likely be pleased with what it has to offer at this price and as a small portable radio.
But do you just have to get lucky with it? Well, we think that you can always request a replacement if you get a unit with some quality issues, and request the seller to check the device before sending you the replacement in that case.
So, yes, you don’t have to leave things on luck as Amazon would certainly come to your rescue if you do get a defective unit. In other words, you don’t have much to lose (if anything at all), as a well-working unit of the S450DLX would be amazing at this price.
