When shopping around for the right radio, you’re better off taking your time than ending up with a product that you’re going to regret buying. Unfortunately, there are some things that you can’t determine based off of a list of features and a description from the manufacturer, but we have a solution.
Today, we’re going to review Icom’s IC-7300 high-frequency radio, which is one of the best receivers that we’ve ever gotten our hands on. Let’s get right into the features before we discuss the pros and cons.
Icom IC-7300 Features
The most essential feature in the Icom IC-7300 is the RF Direct Sampling System, which helps keep noise to a minimum. It does this by converting the RF signals to a digital form, and they are then sent through the FPGA. This means that the circuit can be simpler and that noise can be lowered considerably.
This system also features the IP+, which allows it to receive weaker signals that are otherwise being overridden and interfered with by stronger ones. The helps further diminish signal distortion so that it can be heard more clearly, even if you increase the volume level.
With 100W of output power, this is one of the more powerful radios in its price range, and it can match models that are twice as expensive. With an RMDR of 97 dB, this radio features superior phase noise characteristics, meaning that noise is less noticeable and less likely to interfere with weak transmissions.
This radio also features a total of 15 band-pass filters, which work together with the RF Direct Sampling system. Signals that don’t make it through the pass-band filter are rejected automatically. This radio also features one of the more advanced user interfaces that we’ve seen on a model in its price range.
The main control input is the 4.3” LCD touch screen, which makes it much easier to use than radios with buttons and dials. All of the controls are arrayed along the bottom of the screen. You can even access a band scope, an audio scope, and waterfall function on the touch display.
The inclusion of a built-in antenna tuner helps cut down on the extra equipment that you’re going to need with this model. It is capable of remembering 101 channels, 99 of which are regular ones and two of which are scan edges. There is even a slot for an SD card.
Of course, one of the best things about this radio is the touch screen, which is a rare feature in even more expensive models. It makes operating the radio much easier for both beginners and advanced users. That being said, the user-interface only goes so far, and the performance of the radio itself is what puts it ahead of its competitors.
Thanks to the RF Direct Sampling System and a few other features, this shortwave radio minimizes noise and interference so that you and the person on the other end can hear each other clearly. While most radios don’t have impressive speakers or microphones, the ones that come included with this model are of high enough quality that you may not even want to replace them.
We only ran into a few issues with this radio, and most of them weren’t even serious problems. One of the only things we noticed is that this radio was a bit overwhelming at first, and this is due to all of the features that you’ll have to get used to. This is especially true if you’re coming from a less capable radio.
One thing that we noticed is that the touch screen can get a little finicky when your hands are sweaty or otherwise wet. Be sure to always thoroughly dry them before you use the unit so that your inputs are registered properly. If all else fails, you can still use the buttons and dials.
If you need a mid-range high-frequency radio that is reliable, easy to use, and excellent all-around, then the IC-7300 from Icom is one of the best options that you have available. The only thing to get through is the relatively steep learning curve due to the wide range of features.
