And the Iridium Extreme is a great phone for that and more. We’ll explore the functionalities, performance, and give you the information needed to decide if this is the right satellite phone for you. Without further adieu, let’s start the review.

Iridium Extreme 9575 Features

Upon first inspection, the Iridium Extreme 9575 doesn’t look like today’s phones. Its weight and appearance looks similar to the mid-90s Motorolla and Nokia phones. This 9575 version is both spill and dust proof and is covered in a sturdy rubbed padding that protects the phone once it’s dropped.

The phone has a monochrome display that shows basic graphics. 99% of the time, you’ll be using this for text. The phone’s display can show up to 200 characters at once. It can be used to send text messages and emails, has voicemail, a phone book, and a memory storage up to 100 entries.

It has a total talk time of 3.5 hours and a 30 hour standby time. Compared to its competitors, these are conservative numbers. There are some phones that have standby times reaching up to 45 hours.

Dimensions wise, the Iridium Extreme 9575, which is the same size as an iPhone, but the 9575 is about three times as deep as opposed to the Apple phones. This is not a phone that can hide inside your suit pocket. In fact, the phone is larger when you have to make a call, as a massive satellite antenna is released to receive a connection.

Included is a USB port that can connect the phone to a laptop, which makes the 9575 operate as a data modem. While you shouldn’t expect broadband connection speeds, Iridium states that it has a maximum speed of 13 kbps for compression software and 2.4 kbps for raw throughput.

Iridium Extreme 9575 ReviewWhile this isn’t enough file speed to download video or music files, or browse the internet, it has enough speed to help travelers check their email and receive text messages. Remember, first-time internet users have used 14.4 kbps and 9.6 kbps modems. So with this phone, you can travel with a reasonable amount of connectivity to your friends and family.

We like that the Iridium Extreme 9575 can receive satellites quickly. On average, it takes around 10-20 seconds, making it easy to get some coverage in remote locations. The phone takes about 28 seconds to power up, which is faster than some of its competitors (i.e. phones operating in 45 seconds.).

The phone has an SOS button, which has the appearance of a rocket launched in a James Bond movie. You can configure it with a predetermined contact, which will show you your GPS location every 5 minutes during an emergency.

In fact, it includes GEOs, which gives out emergency services for people no matter where they are in the world. If you press the red button on the phone, it will send out a signal to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center. They will then send your GPS location to the nearest authorities and embassy about the emergency.

Despite these cool features, the biggest issue is the phone’s 30 hours of standby time. High-end phone tend to go up to 50-100 hours, leaving it a bit short behind the competition. When using a 2300 mAh battery, this phone will only last for 30 hours, which can be difficult for longer camping trips.

If you are unable to get access to a charging port throughout your trip, you can either buy an external battery to improve the standby time or an extra Iridium Extreme Battery. Either way, its battery life needs to be consistently checked and charged for it to work properly.

You want a satellite phone that’s simple and effective. And the Iridium Extreme 9575 provides a sense of security and freedom that not even the fanciest satellite phone can provide. You’ll be able to make a call, send text messages, and send emails without having to worry about coverage.

With the phone’s shock protection and its 810F durability, its ability to take some knocks. And it’s microphone is wind-resistant. There is a special grip that allows you to hold the phone comfortably and ergonomically.
