What is a phased array?

A phased array is also known as an ordinary array antenna. Without moving the antenna, you can move the beam of radiations electronically at any angle with the help of an ordinary array antenna. We can also say that the phased arrays are a set of different antennas, and they combine to work as a single antenna to transmit the radiations.
Construction And Working
A phased array has more than one driven element, and to obtain the desired radiation pattern, you will have to adjust the magnitude and phase in each element. But independently, you cannot adjust the magnitude and phase in each element, and it will be impossible to transmit the power to each element.
The construction and the design of the antenna are directly related to the performances and features. Therefore, many things should be considered while constructing the phased array, and it includes beamwidth, departure angle, polarization, overall size, weight, current, voltage, tension, stress, and bandwidths.
Small antennas with small dimensions cannot transmit a wide range of radiations, so there is a need for a directional antenna that will radiate a lot of radiations in a beam, and the phased array in HAM radios does it. Parabolic reflectors, horns, and lenses are used to change the direction of the radio waves. And they are all focused into a beam from where it can be reflected anywhere.
Multiple antennas can also be used by feeding them from a similar transmitter and receiver. And this is known as a phased array antenna. The current is fed in all the antennas, and they work together to transmit the radiations in a single direction in the form of a beam. The power radiation increases when all the waves are added together. If the individual waves arrive out of phase, then one wave coincides with the other, and destructive interference takes place, which reduces the power radiations.
In Ham Radios, the phased array is used to transmit the radiations more quickly and effectively. HAM radios sometimes find difficulty in transmitting the radio waves quickly in one frame. Other than HAM radios, phased arrays are also used in military radar systems to detect planes and missiles quickly. Moreover, they are also used for FM and AM broadcastings.
