Whether you are fascinated by the HAM radio hobby and its large community or want to be ready and armed in the case of a disaster, an investment in amateur radios can be beneficial for everyone.

Because it can be quite challenging to know where to start, we are going to start with one of the best ones out there, the Radioddity GD-77, by going over its features and some of the pros and cons of the product.

Radioddity GD-77 Features

The first thing we noticed about this radio is its ease of use. It comes with a user guide that provides all the details needed to program the radio and simplifies the process. It also shows you how to customize the keypad to input things like the channel information and input/output frequencies. The side keys can be used as shortcuts for frequently used functions.

Another great thing about this product is the ability to upgrade the system’s software whenever available. Whenever ready, you can go to the Radioddity website and install it on your device. The update fixes any bugs or issues that customers have had frequent problems with to keep the system running smoothly.

This feature is essential due to the issues that the company has had with past models. Creating a system that automatically upgrades any problem areas makes it last longer and makes up for the problems that usually are seen with brand new products.

Like with any HAM radio in this price range, it comes with both UHF and VHF capabilities to make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor areas. The coverage range for the UHF mode is 400-470 MHz, and 136-174 MHz for the VHF.

These ranges are pretty standard when it comes to amateur radios. The quality is crystal clear and reliable and is perfect for communicating with people within a five-mile radius if there aren’t too many trees and hills to block the signal.

Radioddity Gd 77 ReviewYou have the option to use both analog and digital modes and can use both the UHF and VHF brand networks for both. The construction of the radio is sturdy and feels great in your hand, and is thinner than other models that have a 2200 mAh battery installed. It comes with a belt clip as well for easy portability.

One of the great things about this radio is the community that has been built around it. There are many online groups in place for people to come together and share their tips, tricks, and knowledge when it comes to this radio, making it an excellent place for beginners to learn and those that are new to the digital side of things.

There is also a dual-wait mode that allows you monitor two stations at once, so it is great for keeping up with what is going on with others in the community while also being able to talk with your friends on the analog repeaters.

Lastly, the build quality is amazing compared to other radios with nice-sized buttons that make it easy for big hands to navigate the keypad with ease, and the battery life is excellent.

While many great features make up the GD-77, there were a few minor things that posed a bit of an issue when we tried it out. One of the first things we noticed was that the display was on the smaller side, which isn’t too bad as it provides ample space for the keys but can be a problem for anyone who prefers otherwise.

Another thing to consider when getting this radio is that it can be a little challenging to program at first if not too familiar with DMR radios. It involves building code plugs which aren’t required with analog radios, so keep this in mind as well.

While most radio enthusiasts are skeptical about investing in a DMR radio under $100, they quickly find out that the Radioddity GD-77 is an exception to the rule. While it is affordable, it provides you with the ability to talk and communicate as much as you need to with high-quality sound and performance.
