The TYT MD-9600 is a very well-constructed HAM radio with steel casing and solid build quality. However, what the customers will find the most impressive is its advanced features and great performance.
It’s one of the most flexible HAM radios out there as it allows users to operate on both VHF and UHF at the same time, thanks to its dual band operation.
TYT MD-9600 Features
The audio is loud and clear, the LCD display is large and responsive, there are customization options thanks to being programmable by users, and lots of other features that make it a great choice for advanced users and beginners alike.
The dual band performance is one of the best things about the TYT MD-9600. There aren’t many HAM radios out there that allow you to operate on both the VHF and UHF bands at the same time.
However, with the TYT MD-9600, you can operate on the UHF band with the frequency range being 400 to 480 MHz, but the VHF is fully covered with a range of 136 to 174 MHz.
The TYT MD-9600 also includes a dual band antenna for the same purpose.
The overall performance is also enhanced by the easy availability of codeplugs, better alert tones, volume control being more flexible, multiple DMR IDs, 3,000 channels and 100,000 contacts.
It’s hard to find a HAM radio that offers more at this price point.
Loud, Clear and Full Sound
The TYT MD-9600 is a mobile HAM radio, and a pretty good one at that. It’s focused more towards commercial use, and offers a great overall sound quality.
The sound is surprisingly loud, and you will probably never have trouble hearing it even in noisy environments. The clarity and fullness of the audio further enhance the overall HAM experience.
It’s also one of the few HAM radios that come with an external connection, which means you can connect a compatible speaker to it and get the most out of its audio power.
The microphone is as impressive as the sound quality, offering all the 16 DTMT tones, while allowing users to easily and conveniently control the radio.
The blue LCD display is large, bright and responsive. It shows a lot of information in a neat way. It’s just about right when using in a vehicle.
There’s one thing to note here though. The brightness level is not adjustable – and while it isn’t much of a problem – it could be a bit annoying for some users, especially when using it while driving at night.
The display is multi-colored and shows a number of elements like the UHF and VHF channels, active channel, apart from the usual ones like the battery power and signal strength.
If you’re a complete beginner, the programming is going to be a bit challenging. However, this is true with any digital radio on the market, so it’s definitely not something you should hold against the TYT MD-9600.
The programming software offers decent functionality, and will make your life easier if you need to make large additions. It does have a bit of a learning curve of its own too, though.
- Dual band performance is amazing at this price, and the TYT MD-9600 includes a dual band antenna too
- The sound quality is great and would be good enough for commercial use as well
- The response to low frequencies is very impressive too
- The build quality and durability is solid and the TYT MD-9600 is sure to last you a good few years at least
- The multi-colored display is super functional with lots of details
- Front panel programming offers a unique feature where you can program without using your computer
- The programming software would take a while to get familiar with for beginners
- The user manual isn’t as useful as users would like, especially the beginners
- There is no Bluetooth, so you can’t use any wireless accessories with it (are we expecting too much?)
TYT MD-9600 Review Conclusion
The TYT MD-9600 is definitely not perfect as it does have a few minor flaws. However, the pros more than make up for it and, at this price, you really can’t complain for what you’re getting.
