TYT TH-9000D Mobile Ham Radio Review

The TYT TH-9000D is one of the most affordable mobile HAM radios on the market. It isn’t a dual band HAM radio like some of its more advanced versions like the TYT MD-9600 and TYT TH-7800, but for the money you just can’t go wrong with it.

It’s a two-way mobile transceiver with an impressive power output of 65 watt, comes with both a built-in speaker and full keypad microphone, 200 alphanumeric channels, functional display, three different power levels and many more features.

TYT TH-9000D Features

Tyt Th 9000d FeaturesAt this price point it’s hard to find HAM radios that go beyond basic functionality, but the TYT TH-7800 is a great exception.

The power output is great, and there are plenty of features that make it one of the most functional options you can go for. Some of them include both a built-in speaker and full keypad microphone, 200 alphanumeric channels, DTMF, 3 different power levels, keypad lock, scan modes and more.

The audio is very clear and loud enough as well, and some users mention how everyone praises the TYT TH-7800 for its audio quality.

The programming is fairly easy too, and even a beginner can do it after doing some searching around on YouTube. Similarly, YouTube also has many tutorials for setting a repeater offset and storing memory channel, and beginners would have to watch a couple of them to do these things.

The fact that you don’t need to use the software to give text names to your channels does add to the overall functionality too.

Great Performance

We really think the performance can’t get better than what the TYT TH-7800 offers at this price point. The power output is great, and some users say how they have been using the TYT TH-7800 24×7 for months now without any issues whatsoever. That speaks volumes about its durability and power.

The instructions aren’t very useful though as the language is what people call Chinglish. So if you need some help on the power and wire capacity requirements then keep the following in mind.

On standby it needs 0.22A. When receiving, it would need 0.3A, and 3.3A for Tx-low. The Tx-med and Tx-hi tend to require 4.75A and 7-8w, respectively.

Please note it may end up using less when you’re on simplex channels and more on repeater channels, but it would almost never need more than 8A.

The power actually turns out to be the best for 220 and 440 bands.

Tyt Th 9000d ProgrammingOther Great Features

The TH-7800 does pack quite a few impressive features in a fairly compact body, making it a great mobile HAM radio at this price point.

There are regular updates that improve the overall functionality quite a bit while fixing some issues.

The durability is incredible. Customers mention how they have been using it every day for two years or more with no signs of damage or other issues. If anything, the functionality and their HAM experience has only got better with time.

However, do note that you will need an amateur license if you want to use everything this radio offers. It’s great for both general hamming and other useful things like storm spotting.

Pros:

  • Great features for the price
  • Impressive power output and great overall performance
  • Loud and clear audio
  • Lots of useful features like ability to give text names to channels without the software, 200 alphanumeric channels, full keypad microphone and more
  • Fairly easy to program although some YouTube videos for programming and using some other specific features can come in really handy
  • Display is clear and responsive

Cons:

  • It does heat up a bit if you use it at a high power for too long, but a particular customer said simply using a small aftermarket fan helps keep it cool
  • The instruction manual is in Chinglish, so it isn’t as useful as some beginners may have liked

TYT TH-9000D Review Conclusion

The TH-7800 is probably as good as a mobile HAM radio can get in this price range. The power is great, the performance is impressive, and the overall functionality doesn’t leave much to be desired.

Surprisingly, the audio quality is comparable to some of the much more expensive options out there.

If you’re looking for a cheap but functional mobile HAM radio the TH-7800 may easily turn out to be your best bet.
