Picking the right ham radio can be a challenge, especially if you don’t get a chance to try it out for yourself before you buy it, but there are a few ways to be a more informed buyer. One of the best ways is to take a look at reviews and other sources of extra information before picking the right product for your needs.
To help make the buying process smoother, we’re going to present our review of the Yaesu Original FT-891, one of the best ham radios that have been produced.
Yaesu Original FT-891 Features
The FT-891 comes equipped with the features that you would expect to see in a radio at twice the price. When dealing with more affordable ham radios, you’ll typically have to keep an eye out for poor reliability and shoddy build quality, but you’d be impressed to hear that the FT-891 is quite well made.
Other than its great construction, this ham radio can cover HF bands, and it operates at 100 watts, making it one of the more powerful options in its price range. It can run on every band ranging from 160 meters to 6 meters, though there are a few features to help make it more versatile.
The inclusion of a triple conversion general coverage receiver means that this model can be tuned to between 30 KHz and 56 MHz. Further improving the versatility of this ham radio, it can operate on several different modes, including AM, LSB, USB, and CW.
Yaesu has also included a range of other features in this radio to make it more user-friendly and to help ensure that transmissions which are sent and received come in and go out as clearly as possible. The FT-891 features things like a noise blanker to make it easier to hear what the person on the other end is transmitting.
The compact dimensions of this radio mean that it can fit in smaller areas without getting in your way, making it perfect for desktop installation. The LCD and the keys on this model are also backlit, so you won’t have to keep the area lit so that you can see what you’re doing when operating it.
This ham radio also comes included with a few extras that help make it easier to use, and a few of them that are essential. There is the mic, a clip for the microphone, and a DC power adapter. The spectrum scope on this ham radio allows you to quickly detect active frequencies as well.
One of the better things about this ham radio is that it is much more affordable than other products with similar capabilities. If you’re looking to save as much money as possible on your next radio rig, then there is a lot to gain by opting for the FT-891 from Yaesu, as it has all of the necessary features.
We also loved how small this radio was since we were able to fit it nearly anywhere in our testing area without it being hard to see or out of reach. If you don’t have a lot of room on your desk yet you’re still looking for a powerful ham radio, then the FT-891 is an excellent choice.
As with every radio, there are a few cons that we have to mention, but we’re happy to say that they don’t overshadow all of this radio’s beneficial qualities. The rear headphone port is noticeably worse than the front one, so if you’re going to use a headset, then keep that in mind.
You also can’t see the voltage while this radio is in operation unless you restart it, as it can only be seen when it’s first getting started. The built-in speaker on this radio also isn’t as great as on some of its more affordable competitors, so you’ll want to use headphones or an external speaker.
Yaesu is known for making more affordable ham radios that don’t compromise quality when compared to their more expensive counterparts. The same can be said about the FT-891, and it’s one of the best models for customers that don’t want to spend too much money on their new radio.
